ABOUT OUR SPIRITUAL COMMUNITY
Lerab Ling is home to a thriving community of monastic and lay spiritual practitioners
Each member of the community studies and practices Buddhism on a daily basis, each at their own level. They also participate in the centre’s activities like welcoming visitors, preparing and holding events, responding to prayer requests and providing spiritual guidance. The community meets together on a regular basis in order to take part in Lerab Ling’s governance and elected chapter which is renewed every three years.
The spiritual heart of Lerab Ling is the community of monastic practitioners who observe a daily schedule of prayer and meditation, following one of the most ancient lineages of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition (the Nyingma school).
During the time of the Buddha monks and nuns were completely dependent on receiving alms from lay people. So too in our present times, the monastic community of Lerab Ling rely entirely on the generosity of others for their support.
Care after you die
When word is received of your passing, we will light 108 butter lamps in your name in out Tibetan style Butter Lamp House.
Your name will be included in daily practices inlcuding Riwo Sangcho, Tendrel Nyesel and Narak Kong Shak for 49 days after your passing.
A tree will be planted in your name somewhere on the site at Dzogchen Beara.
We will contact our closes Lamas and ask them to pray for you.
People of many different faiths and walks of life choose to be cremated, and, often after the death of a friend or loved one, many people find closure in scattering the ashes in a favorite place or memorable location. We can guide you in planning & conducting a Scattering of Ashes ceremony that is personalized and an appropriate memorial for your loved one.
We can provide a range of services on the day depending on your needs, ranging from facilitating the remembrance & scattering of ashes, to catering for refreshments or lunch on the day.
Costs typically range on average from €250 – €500.
We can assist you in planning & hosting a memorial service at Dzogchen Beara or elsewhere, paying tribute to or commemorating the life of a friend or family member.
A memorial service is similar to a funeral service in many ways. The main difference is that at a funeral, the body is present as a focal point for the service, but at a memorial service, the body is not present. Usually, a framed portrait or an urn serves as the focal point at a memorial service.

Average estimate €300 – €1,500 depending on your wishes.
You can also avail of additional services on the day such as the scattering of ashes or lighting of butterlamps, or you can sponsor a memorial item in honour of a loved one for example a mani stone, or planting a tree.
What will our legacy be?
Perhaps the greatest legacy you can leave to the world is the gift of wisdom.
Making a will is one of the most practical ways we can prepare for our death. It is also one of the most significant and lasting ways we can express our love and care for those things that matter most to us in our life—our families, friends and loved ones, and our ideals and values.

Including Dzogchen Beara Trust in your will is giving the gift of wisdom and compassion to future generations. Legacy donations are becoming an increasingly important source of income, ensuring the sustainable development of Dzogchen Beara and all we offer.
It’s a wise move! Legacies to charity are exempt from tax, so by leaving a gift to Dzogchen Beara, you can substantially reduce the amount of tax payable on your estate.
There are three kinds of legacy:
- RESIDUARY – A residuary legacy is the gift of the residue of your estate, or a share of the residue, after other bequests to your family and friends have been made and all debts, taxes and expenses have been paid.
- PECUNIARY – A pecuniary legacy is a specified sum of money, determined when the will (or codicil) is written.
- SPECIFIC – When a particular item of value is bequeathed, this is a specific legacy. This can include stocks and shares, proceeds of a life assurance policy, property, furniture or jewellery.
AMENDING YOUR WILL – If you already have a will, you can ask your solicitor to make an addition (codicil) to include a gift to Dzogchen Beara. Your solicitor may find the following wording helpful:
1) RESIDUARY REQUEST (For a gift of the residue of an estate): “I give to Dzogchen Beara Trust of Garranes, Allihies, West Cork/Ireland (registered charity number CHY 9368) all [or a fraction] of the residue of my estate for its general charitable purposes, and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of the said Trust shall be a full and sufficient discharge of the same”.
2) FIXED SUM BEQUEST (For a gift of a fixed sum or specific item): “I give the sum of € …………………or I bequeath (the item specified) ……………………Dzogchen Beara Trust of Garranes, Allihies, West Cork/Ireland (registered charity number CHY 9368) and I direct that the treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of the said Trust shall be proper and sufficient discharge for the same”.
YOUR PLEDGE: You may wish to inform us of your planned bequest. This will be of tremendous help in planning our future development, and will enable us to acknowledge and dedicate your gift in the most appropriate way.
As an expression of our deep appreciation and a symbol of the long-term vision of your bequest a tree will be planted on the sacred grounds of Dzogchen Beara to dedicate your gift.
The Buddha attained enlightenment under a Bodhi Tree in India over two thousand five hundred years ago. Since that time the tree has come to symbolize not only Buddha’s supreme spiritual realisation, but also his granting of refuge and protection from suffering. It is in this spirit that we will plant the tree at Dzogchen Beara in your name.
