Many masters of the Tibetan tradition encourage us to not let misfortune get the better of us, but instead to take it onto the path of awakening. That advice did not fall on deaf ears with our founders Peter and Harriet Cornish. When Harriet fell ill with cancer in 1993, ultimately that led to the Spiritual Care Centre, named Dechen Shying, coming into being.
Harriet’s death was an inspiration to many of her carers and an article entitled ‘In Memory of Harriet’ was written by Harriet’s husband Peter and published in the Buddhist ‘View’ magazine in 1994.
The article deeply touched many people and from this arose much interest and support to build the Spiritual Care Centre at Dzogchen Beara.
The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese visited the Spiritual Care Centre during its construction in September 2007. On that occasion the President unveiled a bronze plaque in memory of Harriet that can be still admired in the Care Centre to this day.
